7 ways to lifelong learning and development

Latest updated: 26 June 2023

Lifelong learning and development is a must for those who want an interesting and stimulating career throughout their entire lives. It is through fresh knowledge and a constant curiosity and openness to the world that you remain competent and relevant. And not least - your life will be much more exciting if you are constantly learning new things. Therefore, let's now look at 7 different ways to make lifelong learning a lifestyle.

The desire and willingness to learn something new is one of the best drivers a person can have. Knowledge gives immense power, and openness and curiosity towards the world make us better people in almost all contexts. It not only makes us better and more competent employees in the workplace, but also better and more informed citizens.

But how do you practically adopt a lifelong learning and constant development? Here are 7 tips on the way!

1. Practice openness and curiosity

Openness and curiosity are two important paths to learning and development. It may sound a bit vague, but in fact it is very concrete. It is about seeing knowledge as a goal in itself, and continuously seeking outside of your knowledge and competence zone to learn new things. Knowledge is today free, and anyone who wants can seek out knowledge and take it in. In practice, openness and curiosity are practiced by always asking oneself how things work and what things depend on. A good starting point for practicing openness and curiosity is the news feed and the public debate. Why is there war in Ukraine? How does Sweden's energy system work? What happens when the poles melt? You can also be open and curious by being interested in your surroundings: What can my customer, colleague or neighbor do that I can't? What can I learn about the world by exploring my own city? Or take a day trip to the neighboring city?

2. Associate and network with people who know things

A good way to open up to knowledge and learning is to seek out people who possess great knowledge and expertise, and who themselves adopt lifelong learning. You become like who you associate with. Network actively with researchers and experts, teachers and specialists. Seek out places and contexts where knowledge and learning are at the center and are a self-evident ideal. Associate with knowledge-oriented colleagues, attend social events and lectures, engage in organizations, associations or trade organizations where deep knowledge and expertise exist.

3. Set aside time for reading

Reading is the easiest and most accessible way to gain broad and deep knowledge. It cannot be emphasized enough how important reading is for lifelong learning. Reading cannot be replaced by YouTube videos, podcasts, or similar - the knowledge you gain through reading sticks in your head in a completely different way, while also providing space for reflection as you read at your own pace. When you read, you also absorb the language in a completely different way. Your language sense will be crucial for your ability to fully absorb, practice, and share knowledge.

4. Start studying again!

For a long time, there has been a perception that studies are for youth, but today there is an increasing realization that this approach is outdated. We will need to work for longer and longer periods, while the skills needs of the job market change at an ever-faster pace. Therefore, we need to adopt lifelong learning, and concretely this means that we should be open to starting to study again at any point in our lives.

There are many ways to start studying again, regardless of your age and work situation. You can take courses in skills development within the framework of your current job. You can take evening classes at, for example, ABF or Medborgarskolan, or read part-time or distance courses at the university if that fits your work situation. But you can also start studying full-time again, if you feel it is necessary to find new career paths and development opportunities.

5. Learn through social engagement

Social engagement almost always leads to knowledge and learning. When you engage in a social issue, you must usually read up on a wide range of subjects that affect that issue. For example, if you get involved in the climate issue, there is an almost endless line of subjects that are directly or indirectly related; from economics and technology to law and international relations. Engagement can also make you feel more motivated to take in large amounts of knowledge, as you know what you will use the knowledge for. Additionally, you will learn to formulate the knowledge you have acquired, as your engagement requires it.

You can get involved in society by joining a political party or an non-parliamentary organization or association that supports the issues you are passionate about. You can also get involved through personal opinion-making, for example by blogging or writing letters to the editor. Writing is itself a very good way to learn things. As a socially engaged person, you can conduct your own investigations and research, which you then present to others, for example by writing about it. All of this will benefit your learning and development.

6. Learn by teaching others

Teaching others is one of the best ways to learn yourself. When you teach something, you are forced to repeat the knowledge you already possess, which is very beneficial as knowledge is perishable. It is always useful to have to formulate the knowledge you have, as it forces you to sharpen it and identify any gaps that need to be filled. As a teacher, you do not want to appear ignorant, so you will feel motivated to fill your knowledge bank. When you teach, you are also faced with questions that make you see the knowledge from another person's perspective, which in itself is instructive.

The opportunity to teach others can always be found if you look for it. You can offer to train or guide new colleagues at work. You can help your children (or others) improve their grades. You can start and lead your own study group - and so on. Everyone has something to teach, and there is always someone who wants or needs to learn something new.

7. Keep your brain and memory in shape

When we engage in knowledge and learning, we use our cognitive abilities, meaning our brain's ability to absorb, process, and store information. That ability must be kept in shape to be able to learn new things and take in new knowledge, and it can be done in several ways. Diet, exercise, and sleep are three very important factors that affect cognitive ability. To be able to take in knowledge, you must be physically well, get regular recovery, and avoid stress. Otherwise, you will feel "sluggish" and forgetful. You can also engage in brain training or use different memory techniques. Memory techniques are very useful for taking in surface knowledge (names, numbers), which then becomes a good support and framework for deeper knowledge. Other things that are said to be good for the brain are language studies or learning to play a musical instrument.

As can be seen, there are many ways to adopt lifelong learning. At its core, it is very much about point 1 on the list above - openness and curiosity. Decide that knowledge and learning will become your identity and shape your lifestyle. Then you will open up to a journey of knowledge that will not only benefit your career, but also make your life exciting and stimulating.
