Coaching – an effective way to boost the leadership program

Latest updated: 30 June 2023

Leadership programs are an excellent way to strengthen leadership within an organization. However, for the newly acquired knowledge to truly take hold, leaders also need complementary, individual support. Coaching is a powerful tool that allows for more in-depth, individual leadership development - and the results will benefit the entire organization.

Genuine leadership development is challenging and demanding, and to succeed, one needs to utilize several sharp and effective tools. Leadership programs can make a significant difference, but if one truly desires clear individual-level results, combining the leadership program with coaching can be considered.

Coaching is, in many ways, a perfect complement to a leadership program. What makes coaching so effective is its personalized nature and the client's significant involvement in prioritizing the questions they wish to address. The coach's role is to guide the client, ask the right questions, and provide tools and resources that facilitate the coaching process.

While the leadership program focuses on leadership itself, coaching can be more oriented towards the leader's personal development - which, in turn, has a significant impact on their leadership. Therefore, coaching is a highly effective complement to a leadership program.

Addressing Individual Challenges

The questions and challenges addressed in coaching largely depend on the client themselves. It is common to work extensively on mapping the client's personality and behaviors and how they affect their work. This can involve identifying and raising awareness of strengths and weaknesses, for example. Many leaders, like most people, find it challenging to see themselves from an external perspective and understand how they are perceived by others. This is where the coach can assist by asking the right questions and providing the appropriate methods to increase self-awareness.

Once such mapping or situational analysis is done, the next step is to examine the development potential. What behaviors can the client develop or change to become a better leader? How can they make better use of their strengths or reduce the negative effects of their weaknesses? Here, the coach can guide the client in the desired direction, practically by setting goals and sub-goals in multiple steps.

The coach can also help the client practice specific things that a leader needs to handle in their everyday work. This can include communication, conflict management, or feedback. But it can also extend to important aspects that allow the leader to cope with their role as a manager, such as stress management and achieving work-life balance.

Coaching provides the leader with a valuable external perspective and a valuable opportunity to address individual challenges that they might otherwise feel alone in. It works exceptionally well in combination with a leadership program. By utilizing both these tools, you can achieve robust leadership development that will ultimately lead to fantastic results throughout the entire organization.

Summary - Why Coaching is a Good Complement to a Leadership Program

  1. Coaching is personalized, allowing clients to prioritize the questions or challenges they wish to address.
  2. Coaching focuses heavily on the client's personal development and behavioral patterns, which have a significant impact on their leadership.
  3. The coach is an expert in guiding clients from situational analysis to goal formulation and subsequently achieving sub-goals step by step.
